Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

As the weeks went by, I found my mind constantly going back to my conversation with Krish. I tried to push it into some tiny recess at the back of my mind but it kept popping back. To his credit, Krish never brought up the topic when we were together. He’d only stare at me with a thoughtful look on his face which I tried to ignore. I tried to convince myself that I was giving myself too much importance by even thinking that I could have any kind of connection with a princess from an ancient Indian epic. It was time I forgot about it like I eventually told Krish to do too.

And to help myself forget about it all, I immersed myself in my work. It worked out well for me since I was in the process of expanding my business. Unlike earlier, when I would only showcase international evening wear, I had recently begun to include select custom-made designs from certain Indian designers. My day would be chock-a-block with meeting an endless list of designers, collaborating with them on the designs and finalizing the few select pieces that we would both agree upon to be showcased at the store. While all the pieces I had picked abroad were classic and clean-cut, with the Indian designers, I was going for more eclectic and avant-garde stuff.

Since I was so busy, Minti, whose wedding was just a month and a half away, would make endless trips to my boutique, just to talk, and very often rant about the different things that bothered her about the wedding. I had not been much of a help lately because not only was I tremendously busy with my work but unknown to her, I was secretly planning her bachelorette bash with the help of a couple of our common girlfriends.

Mind you, keeping something from Minti was not an easy task. Due to the fact that we were best friends, we spent a lot of time together and there were only so many times when I could use the excuse of me being busy with work. Minti knew something was up, she probably even guessed I was planning something but for once she chose to act oblivious to everything that she might have found suspicious. I found Minti’s ‘act of ignorance’ utterly adorable!

However today, I decided, was the day I should let Minti know about our impending plan so she could prepare a bit for it. But I wanted her to be surprised as well, so there were things I was not telling her—like the full layout of the plan. She had called saying she was coming over to the store so before she came in, I carefully placed nine air tickets on my desk. Minti strutted in, in her high heels and a short lime-green dress about fifteen minutes later.

‘Hey, Dee, what’s up?’ she asked. ‘I was just going over the guest list of the joint party that Aakash and I are throwing for all our friends.
